Formation and Evolution of Black Hole X-ray Transient Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the formation of low-mass black hole X-ray binaries with main sequence companions that have formed through case C mass transfer (mass transfer following the helium core burning phase of the black hole progenitor). We identify these objects with the observed soft X-ray transients. Although this scenario requires a set of fine tuned conditions, we are able to produce a current Galactic population of ∼2000 objects, in agreement with estimates based on observations. The narrow interval in initial separations leading to case C mass transfer, combined with the allowed narrow range of separations after the common envelope evolution, constrains the common envelope efficiency in this scenario: λαce ≈ 0.2− 0.5.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Accreting Black Holes in Outburst
Black hole binaries exhibit dramatic changes in their X-ray spectral and timing properties over time, providing important clues about the physical processes that occur in these systems. Black holes and black hole candidates are prime targets for RXTE with observational goals including the study of extreme gravitational fields and jet formation mechanisms. The great wealth of data from RXTE has ...
متن کاملEvolution of Intermediate-Mass Black Hole X-Ray Binaries
The majority of the ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in external galaxies are believed to be accreting black holes in binary systems; some of the black holes could be as massive as ∼ 100 − 1000M⊙. We have performed evolution calculations for intermediate-mass black hole X-ray binaries, assuming they are formed in dense star clusters via tidal capture. The results are compared with those for s...
متن کاملX-ray Properties of Black-Hole Binaries
We review the properties and behavior of 20 X-ray binaries that contain a dynamically-confirmed black hole, 17 of which are transient systems. During the past decade, many of these transient sources were observed daily throughout the course of their typically year-long outburst cycles using the large-area timing detector aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The evolution of these transient s...
متن کاملWhy Low – Mass Black Hole Binaries Are Transient
We consider transient behavior in low–mass X–ray binaries (LMXBs). In short– period neutron–star systems (orbital period ∼ < 1 d) irradiation of the accretion disk by the central source suppresses this except at very low mass transfer rates. Formation constraints however imply that a significant fraction of these neutron star systems have nuclear–evolved main–sequence secondaries and thus mass ...
